Werge & Corbin Law Group is honored to feature one of its truly incredible clients, Building the Cure Foundation. Building the Cure Foundation is a source of hope that is committed to advancing medical research and developing innovative solutions to not only combat but cure childhood Complex Congenital Heart Disease (CHD).

Desiree Vrionedes Freris, the President and Founder of Building the Cure Foundation, stands at the forefront of a transformative mission, stating "We are on the verge of having an actual cure for heart disease, the number one killer on Earth! Together with Dr. Doris Taylor, we want to ensure that people who need a heart can get one, and that the heart will be biologically their own!" The Foundation is dedicated to supporting those pushing the boundaries of medical research and bringing forth a new era of hope for those affected by CHD.

Central to their mission is the collaboration with researchers like Dr. Doris Taylor, a renowned figure in regenerative medicine, who is developing techniques to build transplantable human hearts that use the patient’s DNA. Together, they aim to revolutionize heart transplantation, and their approach (described in this video from CNN) seeks to overcome the challenges of organ rejection and the scarcity of donor organs, paving the way for a more sustainable and effective solution.

Building the Cure Foundation hosted The Cure Gala on October 28, 2023, which served as a symbol of hope in the battle against heart disease. Against an elegant backdrop, Desiree Freris shared a compelling vision, uniting attendees in a collective commitment to transform heart health. The gala, a celebration of progress and collaboration, unveiled groundbreaking initiatives and marked a pivotal moment in the journey toward a heart disease-free world.

Greg and Kelsey: Conquering Extraordinary Adventures Beyond the 9 to 5! by Thomas Werge

Kelsey Martin participated in the Denver Century Ride on September 23, cycling an impressive 100.2 miles with a total of 4,283 feet of elevation gain throughout the ride! The race took her from the Shops at Northfield through downtown Denver, over to Golden, where she cycled by Red Rocks and up Dinosaur Ridge, then through Deer Creek Canyon, Denver Tech Center, and finally back to the Shops at Northfield. It was her first-ever sponsored race, and Kelsey looks forward to competing in the ride again next year!

Not to be outdone, the next day Greg Corbin achieved an incredible milestone as well. On September 24th, he completed a 33-mile ultramarathon with a staggering elevation gain of 7,000 feet, reaching a peak of 13,100 feet. The race took place at the Sawatch Mountain Range near Mt. Princeton and Buena Vista. Greg's determination and grit helped him to finish the race, describing it as one of the hardest but best experiences of his life. He eagerly looks forward to participating in another 50k—or longer!—next year.

We are extremely proud of both Kelsey and Greg and are excited to witness their future accomplishments.

Werge Law Group Making Headlines Over Lawsuit with Jason Derulo by Thomas Werge

BusinessDen and Denver Post feature Werge Law Group’s client’s recently-filed case against pop star Jason Derulo over his No. 1 Hit, “Savage Love.” Reporter Justin Wingerter states, “The small firm, founded last year, is carving out a niche in the L.A. and New York-dominated world of music litigation, all from a humble homebase in Denver.” Following many years of effort, Werge Law Group has established an area of expertise in bringing copyright infringement claims and other music-law matters.

On July 31, 2023, Werge Law Group filed a lawsuit against singer Jason Derulo and Sony Music Entertainment on behalf of their client Matty Spats, a Grammy-nominated professional producer, songwriter, and musician. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, identifies that Spats co-created Derulo’s number-one hit single, Savage Love. The complaint also identifies that although Spats and Derulo created the song together in Derulo’s home studio, Derulo has refused to give Spats recognition and compensation for his co-authorship.

Werge Law Group is honored to represent their client in getting the respect, credit, and compensation he is due.

Tom Werge Stepping in as Chair of Colorado Judicial Institute’s Judicial Excellence Awards Dinner Committee by Thomas Werge

Tom Werge was named the Chair of the Judicial Excellence Awards Dinner Committee for Colorado Judicial Institute (CJI). Tom has served on CJI’s board since 2022, to increase education about and improve the quality of Colorado’s court system. Fellow Board Member Shannon Stevenson was recently appointed as Colorado’s new Solicitor General, and with her new role took an emeritus position on CJI’s board and stepped down as chair of the Dinner Committee. Tom has big shoes to fill, and looks forward to making sure CJI’s 2023 Judicial Excellence Award Dinner is the best one in the more than two decades since the dinner was first held.

The 21st Annual Judicial Excellence for Colorado Gala Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the Hilton Denver City Center. This event will bring together business leaders, attorneys, and judges to celebrate the honorees of the 2023 Judicial Excellence Awards and to express their commitment to the success of Colorado's courts. Last year the event had approximately 500 attendees. It has been a marquee event for the Colorado legal community since 2003.

CJI promotes excellence, equity, impartiality, and public trust in Colorado’s judicial system. As Tom puts it, CJI “keeps politics out of the courtroom,” by supporting our amazing state judiciary and the impartial way in which judges are appointed and retained in Colorado. As a nonprofit, CJI relies on the support and contributions of individuals, law firms, and businesses to continue its important work. Tom relishes his involvement with the CBA and DBA, and strives to assist our diverse legal community in improving our system of justice and the practice of law.

Happy Juneteenth! by Thomas Werge

Our office will be closed on Monday, June 19th, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday. Juneteenth National Independence Day is the newest federal holiday, which is also currently a state holiday in 28 states, including Colorado. The holiday celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrated annually on June 19th, Juneteenth symbolizes the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the freedom of all enslaved people. It serves as a powerful reminder of the progress we have made as a nation and the ongoing work needed to promote equality and justice.

Werge Law Group celebrates and recognizes each of holiday that the State of Colorado observes, plus the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. By providing more paid holidays, we aim to actively support all of our attorneys and staff in achieving a balance of their personal and work lives. We are also signatories to the Colorado Pledge to Lawyer Well-Being, through which we have pledged to “provide access to or seek to develop meaningful ‘work-life integration’ through flexible work schedules and policies that respect lawyers’ desire for autonomy and some measure of control over professional and personal lives.” We believe that maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for our employees to thrive both personally and professionally. Happy Juneteenth!
