Seven candidates running for mayor of Denver appeared in the Manual High School auditorium for the Denver mayoral forum hosted by the City Park West Registered Neighborhood Association (RNO). Tom Werge, a board member for the RNO, asked the candidates a series of questions on issues ranging from development, crime, waste management, neighborhood preservation, and homelessness. More information on the forum, including a list of the seven candidates that participated, and a link to view video from the event is available HERE. Ballots for Denver’s municipal election go out to voters the week of April 15, and voting continues though May 7, 2019. If no single candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a runoff election will be held on June 4, 2019. Now get out there and vote!

The Werge Law team had a wintry change of pace, and spent a day cruising the slopes of Arapahoe Basin. The mountain setting was a perfect respite from the bustling law office, and the team took advantage of the time to discuss the “bigger picture” and future direction of Werge Law. Whether the team was flying down a mogul run or chatting on the chairlift, the day trip created ample opportunities for team building. We are happy to return to work refreshed, a little sore, and energized to continue to provide our clients with effective and efficient representation.

Werge Law Prevails in Overturning State’s Employment Determination by Thomas Werge

0002.jpg

Werge Law recently won an appellate reversal of a troubling underlying determination made by the Colorado Division of Unemployment Insurance. A worker informed the Division that he was an independent contractor and that he was not seeking unemployment compensation from Werge Law’s client, a small government contractor. Nevertheless, in an extraordinary move, the Division unilaterally made the determination that the worker was not an independent contractor, but was instead an employee. Werge Law filed the appeal and represented the company at the evidentiary appeal hearing. The worker did not appear at the hearing, but instead the Deputy who made the Division’s determination appeared to oppose the appeal. After considering the evidence, the Hearing Officer reversed the Deputy’s determination, finding that the worker was indeed an independent contractor, ruling wholly in favor of Werge Law’s client. If you or your small business is experiencing issues related to independent contractor status for workers, Werge Law is here to help.
